Basically what she said :P Also—meeting this schwa thing of course. XD This is the MOST complete stagedooring experience ever. Not only did we get the entire main cast, we also got the standby Elphie (because we insisted on it—we DID see her performance!) and like when we saw her come out, our friend went “Nikki? Nikki?” And Nikki turned around like “o_o… I hear … a person … calling … my … name” kind of expression on her face and we rushed up to her like OH MY GOD WE SAW YOU AS ELPHABA OH MY GOD YOU WERE AMAZING except I contained my excitement very well (ha)
For a first stagedooring experience, I have to say it was really, really good, and I think I stayed sane. Dunno if it were Idina though. Also Julie Legrand, the lady who plays Morrible was phenomenal. Never thought anyone could compare to Carol Shelly but OMYWORD SHE CAN. Matt Willis was an amazing Fiyero. Best. Ever. I have seen. Nikki Davis-Jones, standby Elphie, like I said, amazing, okay? Movie version: if they can’t have Idina THEY CAN HAVE HER BECAUSE SHE IS AMAZING. I really hope she gets to be the main Elphaba when cast change comes about because she deserves it. Girl owns the role.
I tend to judge Elphies (youtube, okay? I admit it) by the little things and little reactions. Nikki’s? Freaking spot on. Her cackle was awesome, her giggles made me melt, and her ‘blonde’ had me sold. And her voice. omyword her voice. What even. Just. What. The quality was so much like Idina at times it was uncanny, and Idina’s voice quality is hard to imitate if you don’t have it (attempt in Wickeder anyone?). So girl obviously has it. *gushing. gushing so much.*
I love Nikki. I Love. Nikki. So unassuming because she did standby, and when she came out the door towards the end of the night performance, while twosaltshakers was all outwardly calm, I think I blasted “WE WATCHED MATINEE AND YOU WERE SO AWESOME” in her face.
I like Elphies which don’t act too big, mainly because I think it ups the contrast between Elphaba and Galinda’s characters, and helps build to the unhinged-ness that happens to her in the second half of Act 2. Nikki doesn’t act too big, but she acts man, she acts. She was always in the moment. Always. Actually the whole cast. It didn’t matter if they were the sole focus or not of the scene, but they added their little quirks and reactions and energy, it was a joy to watch. She actually made As Long as You’re Mine interesting to me, and I usually get bored with that song (Matt Willis as a Fiyero that could have chemistry with a rotting dishtowel probably helped). Desmond Barrit wins the prize for most sympathetic Wizard I’ve seen. Adam Pettigrew was an appropriate Boq, and the nice version! Not the slimy only-does-things-for-Galinda’s-attention kind, which is an acceptable interpretation in itself, but I just prefer nice Boq who happened to end up leading Nessa along.
And Gina Beck was a doll, okay? Just marvelous. Her Galinda was insane, like. Popular was wonderful. AND ALL THE GELPHIE FEELINGS. ALL OF THEM. ALL OF THEM. I must’ve squeaked once or twice during the show. Another thing about Julie: During curtain call she noticed us standing and kinda looked over at us and I smiled (more) at her and she SMILED BACK with that ‘awww, darlings’ look and my little theatre heart melted. Melted, I say. Melted.

Matinee performance, but that was okay because it was main cast for everyone except Elphie, and the Elphaba standby was astounding. Blew me away. Absolutely. I loved her Elphaba, so, so, much, and now probably my second fave Elphaba (plus extra points for seeing her live) after Idina’s. Cast were sweethearts at stagedoor, which was my first time stagedooring. All principal cast on my one little ticket stub I AM SO HAPPY ESPECIALLY FOR NIKKI’S (the Elphaba).
